Belfast Cranes – Silk Scarf

Contemporary artist Stephen Whalley has created this exquisite pocket square from a series of oil
paintings from around his homeland of Northern Ireland.
Born in Belfast in 1977, Stephen grew up learning all about the shipyard from his father who worked
there as a ‘plater’ for over 45 years. This iconic image of the Belfast cranes, Samson and Goliath has
been depicted in oil and produced on 100% pure silk to make his Belfast pocket square.
Samson and Goliath are the twin shipbuilding gantry cranes situated at Queen’s island at
Harland and Wolff, Belfast, Northern Ireland. The cranes, which were named after the Biblical figures,
dominate the Belfast skyline and are landmark structures of the city.

Causeway Coast – Silk Scarf

Contemporary artist Stephen Whalley has created this exquisite pocket square from a series of oil
paintings from around his homeland of Northern Ireland.
The Giant’s Causeway is an area of about 40,000 interlocking basalt columns, the result of an ancient volcanic fissure eruption.
It is located in County Antrim on the north coast of Northern Ireland, about three miles northeast of the town of Bushmills.
The north coast holds lots of fond memories for Stephen. Going up in Belfast a trip to the north coast every few months was
always a family treat back in the 1980’s. He loves the mythical stories associated with the geological rock formations and as
an artist, the views and sunsets inspire him to return every few months now with his wife and two boys to carry on that old tradition.

Growing up in East Belfast Stephen knew he wanted to be an artist from the age of 5. His relatives
grew up alongside George Best at school and he remembers talking about him at family gatherings
at his Grandparents house near the Cregagh Estate. He loved to hear about the legendary footballer
known to be ‘The Best footballer in the World’ and his amazing talent!
‘Geordie’ as his father called him, was known for his amazing style both on and off the pitch and to
celebrate this local Northern Ireland icon Stephen painted the famous East Belfast man and made
him into one of silk designs for his collection.

Hedges – Silk Scarf

Contemporary artist Stephen Whalley has created this exquisite pocket square from a series of oil
paintings from around his homeland of Northern Ireland.
The area around the Hedges has recently seen an explosion of tourist activity due to its association
with the famous American TV series, which has been shot here in recent years.
This beautiful avenue of beech trees was planted by the Stuart family in the eighteenth century.
It was intended as a compelling landscape feature to impress visitors as they approached the
entrance to their Georgian mansion, Gracehill House. Two centuries later, the trees remain a
magnificent sight and have become one of the most photographed natural phenomena in Northern Ireland.

Stephen felt compelled to paint this scene as it has been a major boost to tourist activity here in Northern Ireland.
